1984 Player On New Teams

Here is a list of the players who were on new teams in 1984 and had a card in one of the update sets but have cards in the regular set showing them in their old uniform. Think of it as the anti-traded set.

Several hall-of-famers have cards on this checklist. Joe Morgan and Tony Perez get their last cards showing them as members of the Phillies. Phil Niekro appears on his last Braves card until the 1988 sets, as he had one final token appearance for the Braves in 1987 before retiring. He has been on cards showing him as a Brave going all the way back to 1964, when the team was based in Milwaukee. A pair of Yankees also get their last cards showing them as a member of that team, Rich Gossage and Graig Nettles. Both would be moving on to the Padres in 1984.


Tom Seaver
Tom Seaver gets his last card showing him as a member of the New York Mets. How he became a member of the White Sox in 1984 is a complete mystery to me. Here is how the transaction reads at baseball-reference.com:

January 20, 1984: Chosen by the Chicago White Sox from the New York Mets as a Free Agent compensation pick.

This must be an old way of compensating for free agents, as I have never seen a player switch teams in this manner. Also, how does this make sense. Isn't this the rich robbing the poor. The White Sox had the best record in the AL in 1983 and the Mets had the worst record in the NL. Maybe this is why players no longer switch teams this way. Maybe somebody can enlighten me on this, as many of my knowledgeable readers point out things to me all the time.

Pete Rose
Hey wait a minute, where is Pete Rose on this list? His last Phillies card is in the 1984 sets and he shows up in the update sets with the Expos. You are correct if you thought that, but I try to fill out the rosters as best I can, and if you remember, 1984 was also the year he came back to the Reds at the tail end of the season, so I will put his Phillies cards in that checklist.

Speaking of Rose...this has to be one of the oddest cards in my collection. I know it isn't that uncommon at all, but it just never looked right seeing him in an Expos uniform. There are a few players like this. I think Steve Carlton is another one. When he bounced around at the end of his career with the White Sox and Indians and a few other teams, he didn't look like he belonged with those teams. Gary Carter on the Giants seems odd. Seeing Kirk Gibson manage the Diamondbacks looks odd now to me. Maybe that will grow on me eventually.

1954 Ultimate Set

I am starting a little side project on this blog that I will run every Sunday applying the ultimate set concept to the 1954 sets. One of my favorite team collector blogs is The Phillies Room. Jim, who runs the site, has been reviewing every Topps set and the Phillies cards contained in them. He noted that the selection of Phillies in some of the years was lackluster as most of the good players seemed to be in the Bowman sets. Bowman was a Philadelphia based company, and my theory was that this had something to do with the lack of Phillies. So I am putting together an ultimate checklist for 1954. Maybe we can get an idea who and what teams were in what sets. Keep in mind that I own none of these cards, so I may have a few mistakes in some of the info in my checklist.

What sets are being used?
The Topps set will be the starting point and then players with Bowman cards only will be added. Regional sets will be used to round out the set. The Dan Dee set (noted as DD), a 29 card set given away in bags of chips is one of them. Since the company was based out of Cleveland, the majority of the players are Indians with a handful of Pirates and a few all-stars from other cities. Also being used is the Red Heart set (noted as RH), which was marketed with dog food. It was a 33-card set of all-stars, although the Cubs, White Sox, and Cardinals were represented more than other teams, so this may have been a regional issue. If you wanted a Stan Musial card in 1954, you had to get the Red Heart set. The third set that I am using is the Johnston Cookies set (noted as BJ). These were issued from 1953-1955 and contained only cards of the Milwaukee Braves.


Retired Players
There were a handful of retired players that appeared in these sets. These are players who would never appear in another game after 1954. They are listed below. One player that I am having some difficulty finding info about is Ben Johnson, who's only card is in the Johnston Cookies set. It appears that he may have never played a game in the major leagues. Angel Scull is another player that appears to have no major league career, but played on the independent Havana Sugar Kings in 1954. I will get to that team in a few minutes.

Players in the Military
Here is an issue that I haven't had to deal with compiling sets from 1981 on. But 1954 was one year after the Korean War came to an end and military service was still a requirement. There were a handful of players who would have decent major league careers, but served in the military and didn't play a game in 1954. These include:

Players on New Teams
In the 1980s, players appear in traded sets, so a list is created of the cards of players on their old teams. There was no traded set in 1954, but due to the nature of both Bowman and Topps issuing their cards in series, a few players appear on a 1953 team in one set, and a 1954 team in another set.

A few exceptions I made here is for Saul Rogovin and Paul Smith. Rogovin played for the White Sox in 1953 and reappeared in the major leagues in 1955 with the Baltimore Orioles. Paul Smith played for the Pirates in 1953 and didn't reappear in the majors until 1957, again with the Pirates. Where did they both play in 1954? For the Havana Sugar Kings. The Havana Sugar Kings were an independent team based in Cuba in the International League in 1954. I am not sure what kind of relationship the Sugar Kings had with the major leagues that year, so I placed these two players on this checklist since they would reappear in the majors again.

1983 - Players On New Teams

Explanantion
This is the list of players who switched teams during the offseason between 1982 and 1983 and are shown in the Topps set with their 1982 teams, but have a card in the 1983 Traded set with their new team. There are 66 cards I am putting in the checklist here, which includes Steve Garvey's last card as a Dodger, Tom Seaver's last card as a Red and a couple of Hall-of-Famers in Tony Perez and Joe Morgan playing a short time in uniforms other than the ones they are noted for.



Donruss Scores
In my opinion, one of the worst sets ever made, and maybe one of the reasons for the downfall of the fun of collecting baseball cards is the 1989 Score set. One of the things I really hate about that set besides the sheer boredom of it was the large number of players shown on teams they were traded away from before the end of the 1988 season and never played on in 1989.

In 1983 Donruss pulled this same stunt with three players, John Curtis, John Denny, and Jim Kern. All were shown with teams they didn't finish the 1982 season with. They are shown with the team they finished with, at least in bad air-brushing form, in the Topps set. I am putting all of the players in this checklist, but they do make appearances in at least one of the 1982 sets in the uniform of the team shown in the 1983 Donruss set.
