1954 New York Giants

World Series Champs
Prior to the 2010 season, this was the last Giants team to win the World Series, sweeping the Indians. This was the World Series that Willie Mays made his catch that put him on the map. Willie Mays was the star of this team and the pitching was led by Johnny Antonelli.

The 1954 Collector
So far covering the early 1980s sets, the player selection for the main three sets can be summed up as follows: put together the starting lineup, starting rotation, and the top relievers from the previous season. These players will be in all three sets. After that Topps would go a little deeper on the bench simply because they had more cards in their set. You could collect just the Topps set in 1983, and get a pretty good idea who the main players were in MLB the year before. This wasn't the case in 1954. Card companies signed players to exclusive contracts, so if a person collected just Topps cards, they wouldn't get a Mickey Mantle card that year. If they collected the Bowman card set, they wouldn't get a Hank Aaron. Stan Musial came in neither set.

Purpose of this Project
So what is the purpose of this side project? To determine who maybe had the better set and determine a little about the player selection. There are two things I am going to keep score of here...the number of starters (at least 225 plate appearances in 1954), starting pitchers (at least 75 innings pitched in 1954), and top relief pitchers (at least 45 innings pitched) for each team in each set. I know as a collector opening up individual packs in say 1985, I probably cared more for getting a card of a player like Larry Herndon, one of the key players on the 1980s Tigers, than collectors in other parts of the country.

At the same time, I knew getting a Pete Rose or Dwight Gooden card (regardless of how their careers and lifes panned out) at the time was a big deal, even though they played on other teams. So I will keep track of Hall-of-Famers and 1954 All-Stars in each set.

Here are the scores for the Giants:
Exclusive players to that set are in italics
Topps Regulars (9): Wes Westrum, Hank Thompson, Monte Irvin, Willie Mays, Don Mueller, Johnny Antonelli, Ruben Gomez, Don Liddle, Hoyt Wilhelm

Bowman Regulars (11): Wes Westrum, Whitey Lockman, Davey Williams, Hank Thompson, Al Dark, Willie Mays, Don Mueller, Ray Katt, Johnny Antonelli, Sal Maglie, Hoyt Wilhelm

Topps All-Stars & Hall-of-Famers (5): Johnny Antonelli, Monte Irvin, Willie Mays, Don Mueller, Hoyt Wilhelm

Bowman All-Stars & Hall-of-Famers (5): Johnny Antonelli, Al Dark, Willie Mays, Don Mueller, Hoyt Wilhelm

In conclusion, Topps had four more Giants on the Giants roster and Bowman had three others not listed above. Bowman has just two more regulars than Topps. Neither company had a card for Marv Grissom, who was an all-star in 1954 or Leo Durocher who was the Hall-of-Fame manager. I would say both companies were pretty even on putting out 1954 Giants. Then, like now, New York was probably a key market to get into, so Bowman probably did their best to keep up with Topps, which was based in the New York area. We'll have two more New York based teams to compare.

1983 San Francisco Giants

The '83 Giants were a team down from the way of nowhere. Brighter days lie ahead in the later half of the '80s for this franchise. I don't think the early '80s Giants get enough credit for playing in some of the worst uniforms ever....check out the Atlee Hammaker card above. Too bad they never played on Halloween.

Best Player: Darrell Evans

Best Pitcher: Atlee Hammaker, much like the Padres, hard to tell who was the best pitcher, so I designed a similar chart, maybe this is something I could start doing for all the teams...maybe when I get to 1984. Hammaker did lead the NL in ERA.

Wins ERA Saves Strikeouts WHIP Total
Hammaker 2 5 0 4 5 16
Lavelle 1 4 4 0 4 13
Breining 4 1 0 3 1 9
Krukow 4 0 0 5 0 9
Minton 1 2 5 0 0 8
McGaffigan 0 0 3 2 3 8
Davis 0 3 0 1 2 6
Laskey 5 0 0 0 0 5
Barr 0 0 3 0 0 3
Martin 0 0 1 0 0 1

All-Stars: Darrell Evans, Atlee Hammaker, Gary Lavelle...this was the all-star game that Hammaker got some notoriety for giving up the first grand slam in all-star game history to Fred Lynn.

Hall-of-Famers: Frank Robinson, manager of the team, although not there for managing.

Rookie Card of the Year: Atlee Hammaker...not much of a career after 1983, but as pointed out above, he was an all-star and did lead the NL in ERA in 1983. Played through 1995, but had his best seasons before 1985. This was not his true rookie card as he appeared on the multi player Royals prospects card in 1982.

Other rookies: Alan Fowlkes, Bill Laskey, Andy McGaffigan, Tom O'Malley, Guy Sularz

First Giant cards
: Jim Barr, Mike Krukow, Joel Youngblood

Most interesting non-Topps card: no Giants appear in other sets. The Giants did have an interesting regional set out in 1983, but is no help to our cause, but will be in future years. Thanks to a heads up from Rod of Padrographs, an excellent site devoted to the Padres, I was informed of the Mother's cookies cards. These cards were distributed at games and in packages of cookies through the mid-1990s for various west coast teams. The 1983 Giants were the first of these team sets. A sample is shown above.

Other notes: A handful of players who played on the Giants don't have Giants cards in 1983. Mike Vail played on both the Expos and Giants in 1983. He has an Expo card in the traded set, so his regular card showing him as a Red is listed here. Wallace Johnson played on both the Expos and Giants, but only has a card showing him as an Expo in the Fleer set. He is listed here as he had more playing time with the Giants. Brian Kingman played for the A's from 1979-1982, and until the god-awful Tigers team of 2003, was the last player to lose 20 games in the season. He finished up his career on this team pitching 4 2/3 innings, so his card showing him as an Oakland A is listed here.

1982 San Francisco Giants

This team actually finished 3rd in the NL West in 1982, but was only 2 games behind the division winning Atlanta Braves. This was a down to the wire pennant race between the Braves, Dodgers, and Giants. The Dodgers and Giants knocked each other out playing head to head on the final weekend of the season. The Padres were also in contention for a good part of the year as well. But it seems as if this division race is largely forgotten now, probably because it didn't involve the Red Sox, Yankees, or Mets (OK, that's a little opinion).

Couple of other things...how come I've never heard of this...according to this wikipedia page, Willie Mays retired after being trade to the Dodgers. I can't find any other record of this happening. Maybe a Giant or Dodger fan can fill in the details. Maybe this is a good example of not believing everything you see on wikipedia.

Also, if you are interested in seeing more 1982 Topps cards of the San Francisco Giants..check out A Giant Blog. Every 1982 Giants card is posted there.

MVP
Jack Clark led this team in home runs and RBIs by a mile in both categories. He also led in runs scored. Although he was in the middle with a .274 batting average, he was second on the team in OBP. Who beat him in that category? A 38-year old Joe Morgan, playing probably the last good season of his career.

Cy Young
Greg Minton, with 30 saves and a 1.83 ERA gets the nod...there were really no stand out pitchers other than him on this team.

Rookie Card of the Year
Chili Davis, who played a solid 19 season career with the Giants, Angels, Twins, and Royals, before wrapping it up in 1999 with the New York Yankees gets the nod here. He is on the Giants multi player prospects card in the regular '82 Topps set, but got his own card in the Traded set.

Most Interesting Non-Topps card
Bob Brenly, who was also on the Giants prospects card in the '82 Topps set, got his own card in the 1982 Donruss set. He was a solid catcher through the 1980's for the Giants and eventually became the manager of the Diamondbacks in 2001 when they won the World Series.

Checking out Brenly's managerial record for this blog entry, how has he not got another opportunity to manage? He led the Diamondbacks to first place, with the above mentioned World Series title, in his first two years. Remember the D'backs were only in their 4th season when they won the whole thing. He led them to another winning record his 3rd year. Granted he did poorly his 4th season, but this is certainly a better managerial record than Phil Garner. And Garner is a candidate for the Orioles possibly (at least what I read on the internet). Trust me, as a Tiger fan, I don't get how any team would hire him ever. Granted Randy Smith, the Matt Millen of baseball GMs, was running the Tigers when he was manager, but its not like he was that convincing that he could be a great manager, despite this fact.

1981 San Francisco Giants

2nd Division
After reviewing 6 American League teams, we are moving back to the National League. This is also the first of the below .500 teams for 1981. The National League in 1981 was perfect in that there were 6 above .500 teams and 6 below .500. So this is the first of the second division teams in the NL.

Future Tigers

I suppose I ramble on about the '84 Tigers enough on this blog, but they were the best team that I followed during my youth. If you are collecting that team in particular, there are 3 players who played a big role on the '84 Tigers on this roster in 1981: Darrell Evans, Larry Herndon, and Dave Bergman. Not to mention Doyle Alexander, who would be the final piece of the puzzle for the '87 Tigers is also here.

Frank Robinson
This is the first team in the then 105 year history of the National League to be managed by an African-American. Frank Robinson was also the first to manage a team in the AL, managing the Indians in 1975. Pretty amazing now that we live in a world with Barack Obama as president that it was only 29 years ago that an African-American was finally given the opportunity to manage a baseball team in the National League. Unfortunately there are no Frank Robinson cards in any of the major sets for 1981.
