1982 Los Angeles Dodgers

Interesting that the Phillies and the Dodgers are back to back recordwise in 1982. These were two teams with similar past and both at a fork in the road in 1982. Both won their respective NL Divisions in 1977 and 1978, but the Dodgers won in the playoffs both times and lost to the Yankees in the World Series those years. Both teams finally took those teams in the early 1980s and won a World Series, the Phillies doing that in 1980 and the Dodgers in 1981.

But that is where the similarities end. The Phillies strategy from this point forward was to try to continue with the core that won them the World Series in 1980 and trade the youth for veterans. It paid off with a World Series appearance in 1983, but sputtered through the later half of the 1980s. Meanwhile, the Dodgers let go of the older players and hung onto the youth from within and it paid off with playoff appearances in 1983, 1985, and finally a World Series title in 1988.

MVP/Cy Young
Both no-brainer selections. Pedro Guerrero led the team in the triple crown categories, leading the team in average, home runs, and RBI. Fernando Valenzuela led the team in the pitching triple crown categories, leading in wins, strikeouts, and ERA.

Rookie Card of the Year
There are actually many to choose from here. Steve Sax, Mike Marshall, Dave Stewart, Tom Niedenfuer, and Ted Power all had rookie cards with the Dodgers in 1982. I am going with Steve Sax with this pick. Both he and Dave Stewart both wrapped up their careers around the same time, but Sax was more solid longer. Plus he actually won the 1982 NL Rookie of the Year award.

Most interesting Non-Topps card
A contender for the Rookie Card of the Year will be used here. Donruss and Fleer both issued a card for Mike Marshall. He was in the Topps set on the Dodgers multi-player prospects card. Marshall was a decent hitting outfielder for the Dodgers through 1989, then bounced around for a few years after that, playing his last game in 1991.

Other items to note
Dave Goltz had a Dodger card in the 1982 set and played with the Dodgers in 1982. But I put him on the Angels checklist, as he had more playing time with the Angels.

If you want to check out more Dodger cards, there are a couple of other blogs devoted to cards of the Dodgers...Garvey Cey Russell Lopes and Night Owl Cards.
